50 women in Sikinani village in Narok West Sub County have ventured in making soap and sanitisers and the exciting part is that Elephant’s dung is the main raw material.
According to a report by Nation, the women started the business after their bead making work went down following the Covid-19 pandemic.

“During the COVID-19 period we were idle at home so we found ourselves doing some projects in making some handwash soap and sanitisers, elephant dung soap and beeswax candles,” explained one of the youth leaders in the region.
Women and the youth who work together in the venture go out searching for the elephant dung at the Nashulai Maasai Conservancy which is adjacent to Maasai Mara National Reserve.
After they have collected the waste, they dry and ground it into fine texture before starting the soap making process.
group’s technical expert, Benard Ronoh disclosed that after it’s fine, they mix it with olive oil,Water and some colouring powder resulting into liquid soap.
The liquid soap is the solidified and cut into equal sizes before being packaged, marked and sold to customers.

They sell their products at KSh 500 for every 50gram.
Testimonies from clients like the Ol Dorpoi Mara Camp who have used the soaps say its unique from other soaps.
According to John pesi who works at the camp, he likes how the soap quickly foams and how it has a sweet natural smell.
Currently, they distribute the soaps at lodges and tented camps in and around Maasai Mara.

They also use them in their homes and sell it to local markets in Sikinani and Talek Trading Centers.
