The Law Society of Kenya president Nelson Havi has been under fire over his lukewarm approach when it comes to dealing with wayward practitioners of law who are sheltered by the LSK.
Since his inception into the LSK office as the body’s president, Havi has been on record calling for the upholding of order and the rule of law in the lawyers’ umbrella -and the country as a whole, always threatening to take disciplinary action against any practitioner brought forward for gross misconduct.
An activist identified as Njeri Migwi has however exposed the lawyer’s ego after she approached him to help in litigating against a lawyer who is said to have raped a minor. Mr.Havi’s response is what raised eye-brows, netizens castigating him for being deplorable and insensitive, demeaning the stature of the office he currently holds.
The activist had sought Havi’s legal back-up who would in turn disparage her on the account that she had been notorious in vilifying lawyers thus being pointless offering her the help.
“So I called Nelson Havi 36 minutes ago to ask for help on this matter of the woman whose child was raped because the man is a lawyer. He has told me he will not help me in any way or form because my name is Njeri….na sisi tunasumbua,” Njeri Migwi said.
The lawyer is now being faulted for being partisan in his operations, netizens already theorizing how he would have helped if the activist would be an ardent of a political leaning that he is claimed to be having favor on.
The unapologetic Havi in his retaliation stated that the activist was one of an ill-famed clique on social media contracted to belittle and play down the work of lawyers and that he was not ready to stand in the defense of the vilifier(s).
“She is one of the many people on Facebook and Twitter under the payroll of Murigi Kamande, Njeri Thorne and Pauline Njoroge who despise our work as lawyers, ridicule us day after day and come begging when in trouble,” Havi said.
“One cannot force a lawyer to act for him/her especially if the request is made from a known vilifier of lawyers. No apologies,” he added.
