After 750 senior citizens died unattended at a luxury senior living community in North Texas, US, eyebrows began to rise.
Now, a Kenyan – Billy Chemirmir – has been charged with the murder of 18 elderly women who died unattended during the period Chemirmir was working at The Tradition-Prestonwood, a luxury senior living community in Far North Dallas.
The police are investigating to find out if any of the other deaths could be linked to Chemirmir, such as Glenna Day, who was killed on October 14, 2016.
Chemirmir is a former healthcare worker who is accused of being a serial killer.
According to various US media outlets, investigators claimed Chemirmir posed as a maintenance worker to gain access to women’s apartments, smothered them and later sold or pawned their jewellery.

He was first arrested in 2018 and charged with the murder of a Dallas woman in her home.
As investigations commenced, authorities linked more deaths to him.
In addition to the 18 murder charges, the suspect was linked, through medical examiner reports and civil suits, to six other deaths, bringing the total of charges to 24 including theft.
Chemirmir’s lawyer has argued that the cases against him are largely circumstantial.
The lawyer further stated that most of the evidence may put the suspect in the area of the alleged murder, but didn’t actually pin him as the actual killer.
“It seems like every unexplained death they come up with, they’re pinning on him. If you look at all of it, it doesn’t stand up,” Chemirmir’s advocate Philip Hayes said.

A state representative from Frisco has filed a bill in response to more than a dozen murders at senior living facilities in the Dallas area.
House Bill 723, filed by Rep. Jared Patterson (R-Frisco), would require officials to notify next of kin when a death certificate is amended. That’s because many of the 18 deaths for which Billy Chemirmir is charged with murder were initially ruled due to natural causes.
“I don’t think that folks in the Dallas-Fort Worth area realize that we had a serial killer on the loose starting at least in 2016 and going for a period of two years,” Patterson said.
Adding,
“There are at least 24 murders that have been linked to this guy so far, he’s currently, as you know, being held right now in jail, awaiting trial.”

However, authorities maintained that they had evidence againstChemirmir, including surveillance video, DNA evidence and an eyewitness account of a 91-year-old woman who survived one of his alleged attacks.
A 93-year old Frisco woman told police after the attack that a well-dressed black man had come to her door and said he was a maintenance worker.
When she said she didn’t need any work done, he forced his way inside, knocked her from her walker to the floor and tried to smother her with a pillow.
According to an arrest affidavit, “she began to pray, believing she was about to die.” The man then took jewelry from the apartment and left.
The woman was able to press an emergency alert button, which alerted caretakers and Frisco police. She later was shown a photo lineup and identified Chemirmir as her attacker.
